Mary Elaine Chittenden passed away on Friday, February 3, 2012 at Fleur Heights Care Center. Mary was born September 14, 1935 in Des Moines to William and Lois Stewart.

Mary married Francis "Whitey" Chittenden in 1962. They made their home together in Indianola where they raised three children. She was a homemaker and childcare provider for many years. Later she retired from CDS after 25 years of dedicated service.

She loved playing cards and shopping. Most of all she treasured time spent with her grandchildren. Family was the greatest joy in her life.

Mary is survived by her children, Lori (Gary) Meier, Lisa Simpson and Doyle (Vicki) Nicholas; her brothers, William (Gloria) Stewart, Kenneth (Judi) Stewart and Robert (Sue) Stewart; four grandchildren, Lindsy (Matt) Breeden, Tyler McAninch, Hanna Hagge and Carly Hagge; and three great-grandchildren, Warren, Elaine and Elizabeth Breeden.

She was preceded in death by her husband Whitey, her mother, Lois (Ed) Hockey and her father William (Clara Bell) Stewart.

Visitation will be held 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, February 6, 2012 at Hamilton's Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. A funeral service will begin at noon on Tuesday, February 7 at the funeral home with burial to follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. ~ The Des Moines (IA) Register 06 Feb 2012.
