Des MoinesNorman Lee Gilbert, 80, of Des Moines died at home on Wednesday, February 15, 2012 of complications of leukemia. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, February 17 at the Iles Funeral Homes-Grandview Park Chapel. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 18 at the funeral home followed by burial at the Mitchellville Cemetery.
Norman was born and raised in Prairie City, IA the son of the late Gerald and Effie (Bailey) Gilbert and lived in Des Moines most of his adult life. He began training as a chef during his service in the U.S. Army. Throughout his career he worked as a chef in variety of restaurants including Johnny's Vet's Club, Babe's and the Adventureland Inn. Norman enjoyed coin collecting and gardening. He liked to exhibit at county fairs and spent over ten years coordinating various Eastside Farmer's Markets.
Those left to cherish Norman's memory include six children, Dixie (Joe) Draper, Jeanie (Greg) Lowe, Sue (Scott) Kluesner, Mike Gilbert, Steve (Bev) Gilbert and Kenny (Teresa) Gilbert; eleven grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Blanch Puckett; sister, Mary Alice Clark; and granddaughter, Jessie Gilbert.
