Resided in Urbandale, IAJack Wetsch, 82, died Sunday, February 5th, 2012 at Mercy Hospice, Johnston from complications of Spinal Cerebellar Degeneration which he suffered from for 10 years. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Pius X Church Friday, February 10 at 10:30 a.m. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter.
Jack was born December 13, 1929, in St. Anthony, North Dakota, the 5th of 11 children. He was raised on the family farm and graduated from Mandan High School in 1949. Jack enlisted in the North Dakota National Guard and was activated in January of 1951 and was stationed at Camp Rucker, Alabama until his discharge in October 1952.
Jack married Leona Keidel on June 2, 1952, in Mandan. He started working for Super Valu Stores, Inc. in Bismarck, was transferred to Fargo as Division Controller in 1957, Minneapolis in 1967 and Des Moines in 1968 where he retired in 1993 after 42 years.
Jack is survived by his wife of 59½ years, Leona, four children, Linda Spotts (Doug Johnson), Maple Grove, MN, David (Sue) Wetsch of Van Meter, Kathy (Matt) Olsen, Webster, WI and Nancy (Mark) Ruechel of Plymouth, MN; eight grandchildren, Sara (Chris) Cape of Plymouth, MN, Lisa (Ricardo) Romero of Robbinsdale, MN, Katie Wetsch and Amy (Matt) Yuska both of Iowa City, Chris Olsen and Emma Olsen both of Webster, WI and Scott Ruechel and Megan Ruechel both of Plymouth, MN. He is also survived by three great grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Claire Cape and Eliana Romero. Jack is survived by five brothers, John, Val (Darlene) and Ray (Carol) of Bismarck, ND, George (Margaret) of Mandan, ND, Ed (Rochelle) of Grand Forks, ND, three sisters Leona George of Benedict, ND Angie (Frank) Boehm of Mandan ND and Loretta (David) Erhardt of Houston, TX. He is also survived by two brothers-in-law, Lloyd (Virginia) Keidel and Walter (Leona) Keidel of Mandan, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Anton and Magdelina (Hatzenbuhler) Wetsch, two brothers, Tony and Mike, four sisters-in-law Betty, Genevieve and Rose Wetsch and Viola Keidel.
Jack was a member of St. Pius X Knights of Columbus , Holy Name and Urbandale American Legion. He was an active member of St. Pius X Church where he and Leona did volunteer work.
Jack enjoyed his children and grandchildren, playing cards, traveling and working in his yard until his illness restricted him.
Since Jack valued and encouraged education for his children and grandchildren, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Jack Wetsch Educational Scholarship Fund through the St. Pius X Educational Foundation.
