Marlan Gene Braet, 69, of Story City, passed away Saturday, March 26, 2011, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 29, at Hamilton's on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines. His celebration of life will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 30, at Lutheran Church of Hope, 925 Jordan Creek Parkway in West Des Moines.

Marlan worked for Iowa State University in the Animal Science Department until his retirement in 2000, and then for Niman Ranch. Marlan enjoyed spending time with his family and was always willing to help others, he didn't know a stranger. He enjoyed playing cards, gardening, watching sports, and raising pigs.

He is survived by his wife, Diane; daughter, Lindsay (Brandon) Metzger; son, Matt; and grandchildren, Alexis and Ashton Metzger.

Marlan Gene Braet, 69, passed away on Saturday, March 26, 2011 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 29 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Hamilton's on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines. His celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, March 30 at 10:30 a.m. at Lutheran Church of Hope, 925 Jordan Creek Parkway in West Des Moines.

Marlan was born on May 23, 1941 to Art and Lanor Braet in Toronto, IA. He graduated from Welton High in 1959, joined the U.S. Army and then completed his studies at Iowa State University with a degree in Animal Science. Marlan worked for Iowa State University in the Animal Science Department until his retirement in 2000. He then worked for Niman Ranch.

On the personal side of his life, Marlan married Diane Buffington in 1969. They were blessed with two children, Lindsay and Matt. Marlan enjoyed spending time with his family and attending Matt's baseball games. He was always willing to help others and didn't know a stranger. He enjoyed playing cards, gardening, watching sports, and raising pigs.

Marlan is survived by his wife of 42 years, Diane; daughter, Lindsay (Brandon) Metzger; son, Matt; grandchildren, Alexis and Ashton Metzger.
