1921 - 2011

Verene Cohn Walsh, wife of the late Irving Cohn and the late Chester Walsh, died on March 28, 2011 in Clive, Iowa. She was 89 years old. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at Jewish Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines, Iowa at 11:30 a.m.

Born on September 24, 1921 in Pocatello, Idaho, to Edith Verene and Royal Egbert Wescott, Verene spent her youth in Idaho and Montana. In 1938 she married Irving Revene Cohn in Butte, Montana, and had two daughters, Suzanne Verene and Marcia Matas. In the 1950s the family moved to the Midwest and Verene and Irving bought Brooks Apparel in Waterloo, Iowa. In later years, Verene took up the profession of real estate and delighted in selling properties around Waterloo, where she lived until the early 1980s. Verene prized her vegetable garden and an acreage of apple trees that she harvested each fall.

After Irving's death, Verene married Chet Walsh and spent many happy years in Escondido, California, growing lemons and roses and playing golf with her friends. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family. She will be missed.

Verene is survived by daughters Suzanne Engman and Marcia Lieberman; son-in-law Larry Engman; grandchildren David and Luz Engman, Tracy Finkelshteyn, Rob and Stacy Engman, Jamie and Andrea Lieberman, and Noah Lieberman; and great-grandchildren Jace and Julia Lieberman, Becca and Anya Finkelshteyn, and Audrey and Nathan Engman.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jewish Federation Community School through the Jewish Federation of Des Moines, Iowa. ~ The Des Moines (IA) Register Wed Mar 30 2011
