U. S. ArmyJohann Friedrich, son of Wilhelm Hillgärtner and his wife Louise, nee Römer, born 20 Jul 1899 in Union Township, Des Moines Co, Ia, baptized8 Jul 1900. Taufpaten (Sponsors) John. Stumpf and F. Scheihing.
At the time of his Mother's death John (Johan) was still living at home according to his Mother's obituary.October 8,1918, Obituary Burlington Hawkeye Hillgartner- John F. Hillgartner, who died at Camp Dodge, will be buried here, the arrangements to be made known later. He was born in this county, July 20, 1899, and during the past two years he has made his home with his sister at Fairmount, Nebraska. He enlisted there June 20, in Company E, second infantry. He is survived by his father, William Hillgartner, who lives west of the city, and the following sisters and brother: Mrs. A.G. Krekel, of Fairmount, Neb.; Mrs. A.B. Jackson, of this city and Bertha and Carl Hillgartner, at home. He had many friends who will hold him in kindly remembrance.
The funeral will be held from the Prugh Chapel at 2:30 o'clock this(Tuesday) afternoon, with interment in the Porter cemetery in the Hunt settlement. Friends are invited to the services. Battery A will furnish the pal bearers and a firing squad in order that this young man may receive full military honors.

The funeral of John F. Hillgartner was held from the Prugh chapel at2:00 o'clock yesterday afternoon with interment in Porter Cemetary. Many friends attended the ceremonies. Battery A furnished the pall-bearers and a firing squad. The Rev. T.S. Bovell of the Walnut Street Baptist church officiated.
