FRANK BOWERS
Frank Emmett Bowers, 60, Des Moines, died of pancreatic cancer Monday, February 11, 2002, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. The body was cremated, and memorial services were Friday, February 15, at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Student Center, Des Moines.

Mr. Bowers was born in Le Mars and had lived in Alton, Burlington and Chicago before moving to Des Moines, where he had lived most of his life. He was a former publisher of the Alton Democrat newspaper in Alton, a managing editor of the Iowa Municipalities magazine, a reporter with The Hawk Eye in Burlington, and a copy editor with the Chicago Tribune before beginning his career as a reporter and Neighbors section editor with The Des Moines Register. He was a public relations director with the League of Municipalities and had taught GED classes. After retiring from the Register, he had worked for John Grubb YMCA and for Barnes and Noble bookstore. He had served in the Peace Corps in the Philippines and marched with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma, Ala., and most recently had lead the effort to require a vote in Polk County on the Iowa Events Center. He had worked for the Register for 20 years and enjoyed training cub reporters.

He is survived by his wife, Joann Muldoon; a son, Frankie W. at home; two sisters, Ceci Hentges of Alton and Susan Willer of Cave Creek, Ariz.; and two brothers, Jerry of Stuart, Fla., and John of Bend, Ore.

Memorial contributions may be made to John Grubb YMCA or Forest Avenue Public Library. Dunn’s Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
