John Henry Wicks, 83, of Ankeny died of mesothelioma on March 25 at his home. It was his wish to be cremated. A Memorial visitation with family present will be 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Friday, April 1 at Ankeny Funeral Home, 1510 W. 1st St., Ankeny. Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, April 2, 2011 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 517 SW Des Moines St., Ankeny.

Hank was born on September 7, 1927 on a farm near Randall, Iowa. He graduated from Gilbert High School and then enlisted in the Navy. After he completed his service he tried doing several things. One was to go to California with his motorcycle in tow and work in an airplane factory. He finally settled in Des Moines where he worked for the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company for over 31 years.

In 1956 he married Anna B. Jensen in Gilbert, Iowa. They moved into a small, new ranch home in Ankeny, raised their four children and never moved.

Survivors include his wife, Anna; daughters, Sandy (Steve) Wendehl of Des Moines, Sally Lee of St. Louis, MO and Suzy Landis of Norwalk; son, Matt (Kelly) Wicks of St. Louis, MO; sisters, Amy (Sinold) Swenson of Story City and Marie (Paul) Baarson of Apple Valley, MN; brothers, LuVerne (Mary) Wicks of McCallsburg, Lamont Wicks of Story City and Robert (Marelyn) Wicks of Jewell; 11 grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Mr. Wicks was preceded in death by his parents; and three sisters, Esther Wicks, Marge Eide and Charlotte Meimann.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Mercy Hospice of Des Moines or Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Ankeny. ~ The Des Moines (IA) Register 01 April 2011.
