A. O. Wolever Dies Suddenly
State Bank Examiner Succumbs to Attack of Heart Trouble Last Thursday Night
Vice President of Citizens State Bank of Colfax – Moved from Here a Year Ago
This community was shocked last Friday to learn that A. O. Wolever, vice president of the Citizens Bank here, and a recent resident of Colfax, had succumbed to a sudden attack of heart failure at his home in Des Moines the night before. The Wolevers moved from Colfax last year shortly after he was appointed state bank examiner by the state auditor. His daughter Ruth was a teacher in our schools last year, resigning just before the close of the year in order to accompany her parents to California. The Register and Leader has this to say of Mr. Wolever’s death:
“Andrew O. Wolever, head of the state banking department, died at his home, 804 Prospect Boulevard, Thursday night, after a short illness. Heart trouble was the cause of the death.
On Thursday Mr. Wolever had been out of the city examining a bank. He returned home at 8:30 p.m. and complained of illness. His condition rapidly became worse and at 10:30 o’clock he died.
Mr. Wolever was 60 years of age. For six years he had been connected with the state banking department. He spent one year in Colfax, serving as vice president of the Citizens State bank of that city.
The deceased is survived by the widow and two children, Ruth Wolever of Des Moines and Ralph Wolever of Seattle.
The death of Mr. Wolever cast a gloom on the auditor of state’s office yesterday. He was considered one of the state’s most faithful employees and was popular in state house circles. As chief bank examiner he was invaluable to the banking interests of Iowa, following a policy of aiding weak banks to a solid footing and guiding financial institutions past dangerous places.
Mr. Wolever came to Des Moines from Sioux City, where he had resided for twenty years, having held the larger part of that time important positions in the banks of the city.
Funeral services will be held at the home Monday afternoon at 3 o’clock, the Rev. Dr. W. B. Sanford officiating.
Word was received last night that the son will arrive from Seattle at 1 o’clock Monday.
