Kathleen "Kathy" Simmer, 74, passed away Friday, January 16, 2009, at Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines.

Family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Ankeny Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, January 21, 2009, at Ankeny Funeral Home. Burial will be in Polk City Cemetery.

Kathy was born on December 17, 1934, in Stuart, IA. She lived in Linden, IA until her marriage to Derle Gene Simmer on January 19, 1953, in Panora, IA. Kathy was a kitchen cook for North Polk Schools and later the Kitchen Manager at Polk City Manor. She was a master seamstress, family organizer, chef, and a gardening expert. She also loved to play cards and cribbage was her specialty. Later in life she enjoyed a trip to Connecticut and dipping her feet into the Atlantic Ocean.

She is preceded in death by her parents, and her daughter, Micki Jo Messer.

Survivors include her husband, Derle Simmer of Polk City, IA; three children, Vicki Merrifield (Lonnie Handeland) of Polk City, IA; Rick (Sherri) Simmer of Ankeny, IA; and Nick (Kimberley) Simmer of Polk City, IA; 13 grandchildren and 19 great- grandchildren. ~ The Des Moines (IA) Register, Sun 18 Jan 2009.
