Hemet, CA

Bart H. Patten passed away on Febuary 23, 2011 in Hemet, California. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 7, 2011 at the Berwick Congregational Church, Berwick, Iowa.

Bart was born Febuary 14, 1917 to Jenny (Huff) and Joseph Patten in Minnesota. Bart grew up in Des Moines and Bussey, Iowa where he graduated from high school. He worked for Munn Cassidy in Des Moines. Bart and Alice Sprague married and had a son, Mike Patten. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII in Europe and the Philippines.

Following WWII Bart worked on dams on the Columbia and Snake River as a welder and shop foreman. In the early 1950's Bart married Mary Virginia Thornburg from Berwick, they relocated to southern California where they lived in Riverside County for 25 years. Bart retired in 1983 as truck maintenance supervisor for ICX Freight Co. He and Ginny moved to Hemet, California for the remainder of their lives.

Bart was an avid outdoorsman, fishing, hunting, gardening and bicycling kept him very healthy. He was a strong supporter of the Hemet Baptist Church where he served as Usher and handyman for many years. He also, was a member of the NRA and the Free and Accepted Masons.

Bart and Ginny traveled yearly, back home to Iowa to see his sister, Mary (Patten) Diehl and his brother-in- law Woodrow Diehl, along with many friends and relatives in the Berwick and Bussey areas.

Bart enjoyed good health until 2010, when he was diagnosed with NonHodgkins Lymphoma. He was blessed by a group of neighbors that looked after him like family.

Those left to honor his memory include his son, Mike Patten (Lee) of Lavonia, Michigan; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a nephew, Ted Diehl (Valerie) of Indianola, Iowa.

Bart was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister and his dear sister Mary (Patten) Diehl. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Berwick Church.
