Cleo Mary Blanshan Krauthoff

Pleasant Hill

Cleo Mary Blanshan Krauthoff passed away Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at Parkridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She had been a resident at Parkridge since 2005. Cleo was born on the family farm outside of Grand Junction, Iowa to Merton and Sadie Blanshan in 1922.

Cleo graduated from Grand Junction High School in 1941. After graduation she moved to Chicago. She was pursued by the love of her life DeVere Krauthoff. They married in 1944 and lived in Wichita, Kansas before returning to Iowa. Cleo and DeVere had two children, Delores and Thomas. They lived in Des Moines until 1969 when they moved to Hartford, Iowa. While living in Hartford, Cleo retired from her position as office manager at Schulze & Burch Biscuit Co. Her career covered time as a bookkeeper, bank teller, IRS employee and office manager. Cleo's passion though was sewing and baking. Her granddaughters Barbie dolls were the best dressed in town. They had wedding gowns, formal wear, dresses, and sweaters. You name it and Grandma made it. She also created jointed Teddy Bears. She entered one in the State Fair where it won Honorable Mention. Cleo knitted beautiful Christmas socks which are treasured by many. Cleo also loved to bake. Her chocolate pies were the rave at family reunions. She was the resource for pie crust making as hers were always tender and flakey.

Cleo was preceded in death by her husband DeVere, her parents Merton and Sadie and her siblings Naomi, Harold, Donald, Kenneth and June.

She is survived by her children Delores Gurnsey and Thomas Krauthoff, her grandchildren Jeff (Trisha) Gurnsey, Jodi Gurnsey, Dustin Byers, Amber Krauthoff and Jennette (Adam) Stroud and her great grandchildren Jaycie, Jordan and Josie. In accordance with her wishes, her body has been cremated and a graveside service will be held at a later date.

Cleo's family would like to extend a special thank you to all of the staff at Parkridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Memorial contributions can be made to the Parkridge Activity Center at Parkridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Pleasant Hill, Iowa.
