Verna Irene Hoogenakker, 104, a resident of Ramsey Village, passed from this life on Saturday, November 24, 2012, at her home in Des Moines. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, November 28, at Iles Funeral Homes, Westover Chapel in Des Moines, where the family will greet friends for one hour prior to the service on Wednesday. Interment will follow at Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines.

Verna was born the daughter of John T. and Barbara A. (Veenstra) Burggraaf on May 29, 1908 in Pella, Iowa. She spent school years living on a farm near Eddyville, later moved to Oskaloosa. Verna taught in a one room rural school and later worked as a receptionist for a doctor in Oskaloosa. On April 25, 1928, she married John Hoogenakker of Pella; they moved to Des Moines in 1929, where they made their home.

She is survived and lovingly remembered by her four grandchildren, Steve (Mary) Clarke of Urbandale, Scott Clarke of Dubuque, Eileen (Dennis) Bogaards of Urbandale and Brian (Carol) Clarke of Des Moines; and five great-grandchildren, Sadie Clarke, Matthew Clarke, Emily Bogaards, Sarah Bogaards and Shenandoah Clarke.

Verna was preceded into eternal life by her parents; husband; son at infancy, Dale Hoogenakker; daughter, Norma Jean Clarke; and son-in-law, Fred Clarke.

In agreement with Verna's wishes, the family has respectfully requested that any memorial contributions be made to Faith Lutheran Church.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to all the staff and caregivers at Ramsey Village for all the care, love and support they gave Verna during her stay.
