John Charles (Chuck) McMichael, 82, passed away March 21, 2016 surrounded by his loving family.

Chuck was born July 24, 1933 in Des Moines, Iowa to Henry Earl McMichael and Clara Marie Eveler, both of central Missouri. He was a proud graduate of All Saints grade school, Dowling Catholic High School and Quincy University in Illinois. He served in the United States Army at both Ft. Leonard Wood and in Munich, Germany, which led to his life-long support of the Armed Forces that extended to a son and two grandsons. Although Chuck was an avid Cubs and Iowa Hawkeye fan, one of his greatest joys was being able to watch his grandchildren participate in all of their activities and sports.

While at Quincy University, Chuck met his wife of 56 years, Sheila Ann McNeil. Together they raised six children. Chuck and Sheila resided in both Des Moines and Jefferson City, Missouri at various points in their married life. He worked for Farm Bureau Property & Casualty Insurance Company until his retirement in 1992. As a member of St. Mary of Nazareth Catholic Church, Chuck was active in The Knights of Columbus, Men's Association, Bible Study and a life-long usher. Chuck lived his faith through his actions with his Church and Family. His love and devotion to the Catholic Faith were an inspiration to his family and friends.

Chuck is survived by his wife, Sheila; his children, Cathleen McMichael, Anne (Randy) VanLoo, Amy (Michael) Brichetto, David McMichael (Rick Casey), Kevin (Tricia) McMichael and a son-in-law, Daniel Graessle; his grandchildren, Jessica, Allison, Chris, Patrick, A.J., Katy, Colleen, Beth, Brian, Maggie and Molly; two great-granddaughters, Grace and Bailey; a brother, James McMichael; and a sister, Dode Pothoff.

Chuck was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Marty; and most recently by his beloved oldest daughter, Helen Claire.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 28 at Iles Funeral Homes-Westover Chapel including a 7 p.m. Rosary and Vigil service. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesdat, March 29 at St. Mary of Nazareth Catholic Church followed by urn burial at Glendale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, American Heart Association-Iowa Chapter, or St. Mary of Nazareth Catholic Church.
