IN THE MEXICAN WAR

H. W. Groom, Who Died Yesterday Was a Soldier

Died at the residence, No. 224 F street, June 7th, H. W. Groom, aged 70 years and 3 months.

Hosea W. Groom was born in Franklin county, Ohio, March 7, 1828. He removed with his parents to Van Buren county, Iowa in 1836 and ten years later moved to Marion county. After living there a short time he returned to Van Buren county and enlisted in Company K of the Fifteenth United States Infantry, serving until the close of the Mexican war. He offered his services to the United States in the perilous days of 1861, but was rejected on account of disabilities received during the Mexican war. He leaves a wife and nine children to mourn his loss, all of whom were with him in his last hours.

Mr. Groom was a kindly neighbor, a gallant soldier, a loyal friend, a loving husband and father, one of earth's gentlemen of whom it might truly be said, "Nature might stand up and say to all the world 'This was a man.'"

The funeral will be held from the residence Thursday, June 9, at 2 p.m.
