William S. McMahon.
A memorial service for Monsignor William S. McMahon, 79, of Listowel Ireland, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Peter Catholic Church in Des Moines. A previous funeral service and burial were held in Ireland. Monsignor McMahon died of cancer Friday in Ireland, where he was born and had returned to earlier this year.
He was ordained in 1933 and had served as pastor of St. Peters Catholic Church for 23 years until his retirement. He was formerly chancellor of the Des Moines Diocese and had served earlier as a pastor in Winterset, Shenandoah and Lenox.
His survivors, all of Ireland, include a brother, Patrick, and two sisters, Grace McMahon and Nuala Cowhey.
A rosary and Scripture service will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the church and memorial contributions may be made to the Priests’ Pension Fund of the Diocese of Des Moines.
