DOMINIC A. CALIGIURI 1922 to 2011

Dominic A. Caligiuri, 89, passed away Thursday, November 3, 2011 at Regency Care Center in Norwalk. He was born June 21, 1922 in Des Moines to Charles and Theresa Caligiuri.

Dominic served in the Navy during World War II and retired as a Lieutenant with the Des Moines Fire Department after 39 years. He also drove a school bus for St. Anthony School and was a painter during those years with the fire department. Dominic later retired from Hy-Vee Food Stores after ten years of service. He enjoyed being a baseball coach, playing golf, spending time with his children and grandchildren and watching their sporting events as well as all sports on TV. He also enjoyed vacations to Las Vegas and Hawaii. Dominic was a very involved member with Bellizzi Macrae American Legion Post 659, the Knights of Columbus and chaired St. Vincent DePaul Society and was a lifelong member of St. Anthony Catholic Church.

He is survived by his loving children; two daughters, Linda Anderson of Gardner, KS and Teri (Steve) Blaylock of Des Moines, and five sons, Jim Caligiuri of Des Moines, Joe (Chris) Caligiuri of Norwalk, Dominic Caligiuri, Jr. of Urbandale, Mike (Sue) Caligiuri of Waukee and John (Karen) Caligiuri of Kansas City, MO; thirteen grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; brother, Charles Caligiuri; and sister, Mary Tonini, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Dominic was preceded in death by his loving wife of 65 years, Ilene; his parents, four brothers, James, Frank, Bruno and Sam; daughter-in-law, Killeen Caligiuri and son-in-law, Mike Anderson.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, November 7, 2011 at St. Anthony Catholic Church with burial and military funeral honors at Glendale Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday at Brooks Tonini Chapel, 2135 SW 9th St., Des Moines, from 4 to 7 p.m. with a Rosary Service at 6:30 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the family for a donation of their choice in Dominic's honor.
