Mary E. Shannon Dies This Morning In Des Moines

Death Follows Illness Of Two Weeks. Funeral Services Here Thursday Afternoon.

Mrs. Mary E. Shannon, 86, wife of the late S. E. Shannon, mother of twelve children, one of the early settlers of Cass county and a well known woman, died at her home at 3 o'clock this morning at her home in Des Moines following an illness of two weeks. Mrs. Shannon was stricken two weeks ago with gall stone trouble and later pneumonia developed.

Mary E. Hughes was born in Adah county, Ky., on Aug. 16, 1847 and in 1860 she moved with her parents to St. Charles, Ia. in Madison county. She was married at St. Charles to S. E. Shannon in 1865 and in 1881 they came to this county. They resided in the county until 1911 when they moved to Des Moines, living there until their respective deaths. Mr. Shannon died in 1912.

Member Of M.E. Church 68 Years

Mrs. Shannon had been an active member of the Methodist Episcopal church for 68 years.

Mr. and Mrs. Shannon were the parents of twelve children, five of whom preceded them in death. Two children died in infancy and Mary Etna, Kirk, Dora Harris and one son, Sam, preceded their parents in death.

The surviving children are Ed T. Shannon, of Atlantic, H. U. Shannon, of Anita, G. T. Shannon, of Council Bluffs, Miss Dolly Shannon, of Des Moines, Mrs. H. F. Harris and Mrs. J. E. Steinhart, of Chicago, and W. H. Shannon, of Butte, Mont. Eighteen grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and two brothers, Elza Hughart, of Cromwell, Ia. and Will Hughart, of Warren, Ariz. also survive.

Short Rites At Capitol

Short services will be held at 10 o'clock Thursday morning at her late home in Des Moines at 1126 19th street.

Following the rites the body will be brought overland here to the home of her son, 1207 Locust street. The main services will be held at 2:30 Thursday afternoon at the local Methodist Episcopal church with the Rev. L. M. Grisby, pastor of the church officiating. The Rev. Mr. Grisby formerly was pastor of the Methodist church in the capitol city which Mrs. Shannon attended.

Interment will be in the Atlantic cemetery.
