Donald Lyle "Gooch" Goble passed away on Wednesday, October 6, 2010 at his home in Des Moines, IA.

Born November 22, 1933 to J. Earl and Retia (Price) Goble in Des Moines on the south side, he graduated from Lincoln High School where he lettered in football. In recent years, he loved watching his nephews Tyler and Jacob Goble play football for Lincoln High School.

He served honorably in the United States Navy on the ship USS Donner. Following his service he returned to Des Moines and worked for the Rock Island Railroad before joining the Des Moines Fire Department as a firefighter and later as an inspector. He retired after 31 years of service. He and Kay sold their home on Creston in Des Moines and spent the next 20 years at Cutty's Resort in Grimes and wintering in Donna, TX.

As a sportsman, he loved everything outdoors: boating, camping, fishing, football, softball, golf, mototcyles, gardening and playing fetch with his dog, Annie. He also enjoyed coaching his sons in South Des Moines Little League. He teased his sons that he was always the better athlete and they told him they were the better athletes, and that he was in "Dad" denial. True to Goble form, we never knew what he might say, or when! He especially loved the visits with his grandchildren, Shannon (Dickey), Jonathon, Lisa (Inman); Adam, Ben (Angela) and Nick; and great-grandchildren, Amelia, Julia, Isabel, Kayleigh, Maci, Cassidy and Trip. He was loved and will be missed by many!

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Kay; sons, Mark (Gayle), Kent, Donald L. II, "Gus" and daughter, Julie Goble; his sister, Darlene (Ralph) Jennings; sister-in-law, Janet Goble; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; his many nieces and nephews; and his much loved dog, Annie. Preceding Don in death were his parents, J. Earl and Retia; a brother, Jimmy; a niece, Cheri (Goble) Robbins; and two nephews, Rick Jennings and Damon Bartling.

The Goble family would like to give a special thank you to Dana McCarthy, Cassie Lundberg and Vicky Gladson from Hospice of Central Iowa for their thoughtfulness and loving care. He always looked forward to your visits.

Per Donald's wishes, there will be no public service. The family invites you to a celebration of Don's life at Cutty's Resort clubhouse (across from tennis court), 2350 SE 37th, Grimes, IA at 2 p.m. on October 23, 2010. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Central Iowa.
