BERNADENE HOWARD FOX 1913 to 2007

Bernadene Howard Fox died peacefully of old age on February 22, 2007, at Spurgeon Manor in Dallas Center.

Born to Ray and Jane Coppock Howard on July 12, 1913, in Ankeny, she moved to Dallas Center while still a baby.

Bernadene graduated from Dallas Center High School in 1931 and Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa where she received her teaching certificate. She taught at several rural schools in Dallas County, including Gardner and Sugar Grove #9.

She married Orville Fox on March 30th, 1937. They had four children: Kay Ann Gruis (Willard) of Ogden, UT., Bradley Howard Fox (Diane) of Dallas Center; Karen Marie Hasman of San Diego, CA; John Frank Fox of Ames. Bernadene had 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

She and Orville spent many years farming near Dallas Center before his death in 1979. In 1989 she moved into town.

Bernadene loved to collect antiques and was a member of the Dallas Center Chapter of Cameo Belles Questers. She also loved to travel and visited Europe, Central America, Hawaii, and Mexico.

She was an 80-year member of the Dallas Center United Methodist Church. She was also a longtime member of the United Methodist Women. She was a 4H leader, and was awarded the Governor's Volunteer of the Year for her many years in the kindergarten classroom at Dallas Center.

Her husband, Orville; her brother, Arthur Howard, and her parents preceded Bernadene in death.

She is survived by her 4 children; her sister, Barbara Brandt of Urbandale, her 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

It is the grace with which Bernadene lived her life that we remember. To Spurgeon Manor staff, the family gives gratitude for all the loving care that you gave to Bernadene.

Visitation will be Monday, February 26th at Brandt Funeral Home with the family present from 5 until 7 p.m.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 27th at the Dallas Center United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at the Masonic Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to her church, the Dallas Center United Methodist or to Spurgeon Manor.
