Gary Sterling McCasland, 58, of Des Moines died Sept. 12, 2010, of heart failure at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, at Kale Funeral Home in Osceola with the Rev. Kevin Smith officiating. Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 17, with the family present to greet friends from 6–8 p.m. Burial will be at Fremont Cemetery. Gary McCasland was born Dec. 26, 1951, in Des Moines to Sterling Major “Tex” and Mabel Fern (Patterson) McCasland. He grew up in Des Moines and in 1974 married JoEllen Johnston. They resided in Norwalk for over 20 years prior to their divorce. At that time, Gary moved back to Des Moines to live with his parents. Gary worked for Check All Valves in Des Moines for over 20 years and for Country Haven Guest Homes near St. Charles for several years.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents — Ernest and Lela Patterson of Peru and Walter and Myrtle Deitrick of Des Moines.

He is survived by his parents, Major “Tex” and Fern of Des Moines; one daughter, Kimberly Harlan of Norwalk; one brother, Steven McCasland of Des Moines; one sister, Mabel Briggs of Des Moines; and four grandchildren.
