Death of Fred Gould

W. F. Gould, conductor on the Winterset branch of the Rock Island railroad, died suddenly at his home in Des Moines at one o’clock Monday. His death was caused by a slight attack of pneumonia, aggravated by heart disease. He ran his train to Winterset the morning trip Saturday and on reaching Des Moines asked to be relieved as he was not well.

W. F. Gould was born in England, Aug. 8, 1842. He came to America when a boy and settled in Georgia, where he attended school for several years. He then came to Iowa and entered the employ of the Rock Island as a locomotive fireman in December 1862. Two years later he was advanced to the position of engineer. As engineer and conductor he has been continuously in the employ of the company for 48 years. In 1889 he was appointed general yardmaster in Des Moines. In 1892 he came to the Winterset branch as conductor and has continuously remained in the service until his death.

The funeral service was held from the family residence on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock. The following, who, with the exception of Geo. Swan, retired station master, are veteran engineers, acted as pall bearers: Charles Davis, James Wilkinson, John Caldwell, James Crocker, John Williams and Geo. Swan.
