Lola (Burnham) Howard, 83, died peacefully on May 18 at her residence, Taylor Home, in Jacksonville, FL. Lola was born February 4, 1927 in Linden, IA. After her graduation from high school in Adel, IA she worked at the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company, Ames, IA. While visiting relatives in Billings, MT she met her future husband, William Loren Howard. The young couple was married on December 18, 1948 at the First Congregationalist Church of Billings, MT. Lola had been previously diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes as a teenager in 1941 and that contributed to two unsuccessful pregnancies. In 1953 the young couple moved to Winter Park, FL. Lola worked briefly for Winter Park Hospital in Administration but found her niche working with new accounts and client relations at Sun Bank (SunTrust) in College Park, FL. She stayed with them until her retirement in 1987. Her passion and hobby were her plants - yours were always fair game. Often she would visit and 'sneak' cuttings from plants of friends and family which would in turn result in a specimen plants rivaling their parent donor. In 2002 she moved to Jacksonville, FL and spent her remaining years under the wonderful care and supervision of the staff at Taylor Manor and Taylor Home.

She is survived by her two caring, devoted and loving adopted children, Kimberly Stewart(Stephen) Jacksonville, FL, Robert Howard(Liesa), Sanford, FL and his son Robert Brooks Howard, Jr. Surviving sisters and brothers include Mariam Gamble and William Burnham, Des Moines, IA; Shirley Kubiskey, Vienna, VA; Charles Burnham(Sue), Round Lake, IL; Carolyn Guzman(Jess), Altoona, IA and 19 nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by ex-husband and friend William Howard, parents, William and Florence Burnham, sisters Wilma Frangos and Louise Burnham; and her long time friend and companion L.P. Hagen of Orlando, FL.

Lola will be cremated at Hatcher Cremations, Jacksonville, FL, and buried with her parents and sister Louise at Story Memorial Gardens, Ames, IA. A graveside service will be performed later this fall for family and friends. In lieu of flowers the family is requesting that memorial contributions be made to the Samuel C. Taylor Foundation, 6601 Chester Avenue, Jacksonville, FL 32207; Community Hospice of NE Florida, 4266 Sunbeam Rd., Jacksonville, FL 32257 or the American Diabetes Association, 1701 N. Beauregard St., Alexandria, VA 22311.
