Leona F. Michael Howard, 71, died at 3801 Grand Ave., where she was presently living on February 24, 2010 from COPD. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, February 27, 2010 at Iles Funeral Homes-Westover Chapel. Burial will be at a later date in Runnells Cemetery.
Leona was born on Aug. 7, 1938 in Erie, Kansas to Robert and Martha Catron Michael. On June 7, 1956, Leona married the love of her life, Gerald W. Howard. They had a fun, adventurous life raising two children, Bret and Lisa. They had five grandchildren, Jayme Howard, Anne Howard, Connor, Chloe and Sophia Kenworthy.
Leona had many jobs as an accountant and bank manager. Gerald and Leona began their married life in Des Moines and had lived in Johnston, Ankeny, Cedar Rapids and Walcott, Iowa.
Leona was a very talented decorator. Her home graced the pages of Better Homes and Gardens many times. In later years, she became an amazing gardener. She transformed their Walcott residence into a wonderland. Leona spent ten hours a day with her beautiful flowers.
She will be missed by son, Bret; daughter, Lisa (John) Kenworthy; grand-children, Jayme Howard, Anne Howard, Connor, Chloe and Sophia Kenworthy; her sister, Lois Robinson and many loving nieces, nephews and family members.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Howard; brothers, Denzil and Paul and sister, Lola Bricker.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Central Iowa, of which gave her excellent care. A special thank you to the people at 3801 Grand Ave, Des Moines and the outpatient caregivers of Hospice of Central Iowa.
