Lucille Irene Sexauer McCleary, 89, passed away on Friday, December 18, 2009 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston.
Visitation is 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, December 20 at Ankeny First United Methodist Church, 206 SW Walnut Street in Ankeny, Iowa. The funeral service will be held at Ankeny First United Methodist Church at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, December 21, 2009. Graveside services will follow the funeral at Greenwood Friends Cemetery on Oralabor Road in Ankeny.
Lucille was born on her parent's farm in Ankeny, Iowa on January 26, 1920 to Fred and Pearl McClung Sexauer. She graduated from Ankeny High School in 1938.
She married Abel T. McCleary on March 15, 1941 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They lived on a farm near Bondurant, Iowa until Abel was drafted into the United States Army March 1942. Abel served overseas in World War II while Lucille worked at the Ordnance Plant in Ankeny, Iowa.
After World War II Abel and Lucille moved to Ankeny to start a family in what is now the Ankeny Historical Society House. Lucille and Abel owned and operated McCleary Shoes in Ankeny from 1958 to 1984.
Lucille was a member for 75 years at the Ankeny First United Methodist Church and a long time member of Unity Club in Ankeny. She enjoyed making 12 quilts for her family and spending time with her family.
Abel and Lucille were married 68 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers-Adolph Sexauer in 1944 and Leland Sexauer in 2000.
Lucille is survived by her husband, Abel; her children, Doreen(Lawrence)Gillespie of Nevada, Melvin(Sandy) of Okoboji, and Norman(Deb)McCleary of Ankeny; seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and a host of beloved friends.
Memorial contributions may be given to: Ankeny First United Methodist Church, Ankeny Historical Society or Mercy Hospice.
