Julie I. Baird, 48, a devoted wife, mother, daughter and friend, died Sunday, February 3, 2008 from adenocarcinoma of unknown origin at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. Funeral services will be 10: 30 a.m., Friday at Lutheran Church of Hope, West Des Moines. Burial will be at Glendale Cemetery, Des Moines.

Julie was born July 13, 1959 in Prairie du Chien, WI, the daughter of Rex and Irene Kleckner. She graduated from Wartburg College and on June 6, 1981, was united in marriage to Mark Baird.

Julie and Mark lived in Iowa City for 17 years and the last seven years in Urbandale. Julie was an avid volunteer in the work of the church, her children's schools, and Boy Scouts. She was vice president of the Southeastern Iowa Synod (SEIA) of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA). She served on the Launch Team for Abiding Savior Lutheran Church, was a Bible Study Fellowship Leader, and global advocate in women's struggles in Tanzania and Mexico.

Julie lived with such enthusiasm and joy in her faith that it permeated the atmosphere where others gathered. She created and nurtured relationships, leading others to the Lord by her selfless actions and radiant smile. Her final wish was that God be glorified through her life and her death.

Julie is survived by her husband, Mark; sons, Jesse (Teresa fiancé) of Denver, IA, Joshua and Jacob of Urbandale; her parents, Rex and Irene Kleckner of Riceville, IA; brothers, Curt Kleckner of Osage and Kent (Jill) Kleckner of Decorah; parents-in- law, William (Shirley) Baird of Muscatine; sister-in-law Linda (Tommy) Light of Houston, TX; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m., Thursday at Lutheran Church of Hope.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Abiding Savior Lutheran Church, SEIA Synod of the ELCA or Bible Study Fellowship.
