Albert Baird Cummins
Republican of Des Moines, Polk county, was born near Carmichaels, Pennsylvania, February 15, 1850; was educated in the public schools, preparatory academy, and was three years in Waynesburg (Pa.) College; the latter institution conferred the degrees of M. and A. and LL. D. upon him, and Cornell College, Iowa, that of LL. D.; is a lawyer by profession, and married; and was a member of the House of Representatives of the Twenty-second General Assembly of Iowa; a member of the Republican National Committee from 1896 to 1900, and Governor of Iowa from January, 1902, until elected November 24, 1908, to fill a vacancy in the United States Senate caused by the death of Hon. W.B. Allison. Was re-elected in 1908, 1914 and 1920.
