John Wesley Cox
Chief Oil Inspector, was born in Rock Island county, Illinois, March 19, 1845. Received his education in the high school and academy at Galva, Illinois. enlisted in the 112th Illinois Infantry in 1863 and served until the close of the war. Was married at Woodhull, Illinois, in 1871, to Mary Magner. They have two children. After the war, he engaged in the hardware and implement business at Woodhull, Illinois, and later at Clarinda, Iowa. Moved to Des Moines n 1891 and engaged in real estate and investments. Was appointed chief of police at the state capitol by Governor Carroll. Was appointed chief oil inspector January 1, 1920, by Governor Harding. Is a member of the Masonic bodies and a republican in politics.
