LAST RITES HELD FOR JAMES FITZGERALD
Funeral Services Held At St. Columbkille's Church Sunday Morning.
Funeral services for James E. Fitzgerald, 64, of Varina, who passed away at Mercy Hospital in Fort Dodge, Monday evening, December 29, 1941, after a ten month illness, were held at Varina Saturday morning at 9:30. Father Barry celebrated the Solemn High Mass, assisted by Father Lilly of Ogden as Deacon and Father Howley of Fonda as Sub-Deacon.
Pall bearers were Hubert Kapsch, Pocahontas; Vincent Fitzgerald, Storm Lake; Con Schnetter, Henry Deacon, Leonard Hall and John Tweddale, all of Varina. Burial was in St. Colmubkille's cemetery at Varina.
Amoung those from out-of-town attending the services were Father Lilly and Mrs. Margaret Lilly of Ogden; Sister Mary Esperance and Sister Mary St. Collista of Sioux City; Joe White, Sioux City; Mr. and Mrs J. P. Fitzgerald and family of Fonda; Mr. and Mrs. Otto Hallman and daughter Katherine of Pocahontas; Mr. and Mrs. Ray Fitzgerald of Laurens; Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Fitzgerald of Storm Lake; Hubert Kapsch of Pocahontas; T. P. and Maurice Fitzgerald, Mr. and Mrs. Emmet Fitzgerald and daughters Patricia and Sidney, and R. B. Lacey, all of Fonda.
James Edward Fitzgerald, son of Patrick and Mary Fitzgerald, was born August 7, 1877 in Allamakee County, Iowa and died at Mercy Hospital in Fort Dodge, December 29, 1941, at the age of 64 years, 4 months and 22 days.
While he was still a child he moved with his parents to a farm near the present site of Varina and had been a resident of that vicinity since. He received his education in the rural schools.
On May 31, 1905 he was united in marriage to Anne Carey of Varina. To this union six children were born: Mrs. Gus Kapsch and Mrs. Edward Ryan of near Varina; Mrs. Don Archer, Steger, Illinois; Marlin, Steger, Illinois; and Caire of Louisville, Ky. One son died in infancy.
Following their marrage Mr. and Mrs. Fitzgerald lived on a farm north of Varina for two years. From 1907 to 1928 he operated a general store in Vaina.
In 1928 they spent a few months in Colorado for Mrs. Fitzgerald's health, returning in 1929 and Mr. Fitzgerald opened a hardware store in Varina, which he operated until a few months before his death. Mrs. Fitzgerald preceded him in death October 1934.
The deceased, who was a member of the Knights of Columbus, always took a very active part in church and local public affairs.
He leaves to mourn his death five children, nine grandchildren, six sisters, Sister Mary Esperance and Sister Mary St. Collista of Sioux City; Mrs Margaret Lilly, Ogden; Mrs. Frank Lilly, Varina; Mrs. Otto Hallman, Pocahontas; and Mrs. Joe White, Sioux City; three brothers, J. P., Fonda; Frank, Hutchinson, Minn and Charles of Ivanhoe, Minn.
