Alice M. (Lathrop) Grawe, 90, of Waverly, Iowa, passed away on Friday evening, February 2, 2018, at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly.
Alice was born on March 30, 1927, in rural Pocahontas County, Iowa, the daughter of Byron W. and Anna (Rhinehart) Lathrop. She attended the Havelock Consolidated School graduating in 1945. Alice then attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, where she received her teaching certificate. Alice taught sixth grade at Marathon and Mallard. In 1948, Alice moved to Waverly where she taught school at Washington Irving. On June 17, 1950, she was united in marriage to Joseph F. Grawe in Havelock, Iowa. The couple returned to Waverly, where Joe worked with the family newspapers and Alice continued to teach until they started to raise their family. Joe passed away on June 21, 2010 and Alice lived in her home until she became a resident of the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community on December 19, 2014.
Alice was a faithful member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Waverly and was active in various organizations. In her spare time, she enjoyed genealogical research, traveling and spending time with her family.
Alice is survived by her seven children, Barbara Wedge of Clinton, Iowa; John Grawe of Republic, Missouri; Carolyn (Dennis) Bollman of Waverly, Iowa; Thomas (Joan) Grawe of Pine, Colorado; Rebecca (Keith) Albert of Frisco, Texas; James Grawe of Wichita, Kansas and Mark (Amy) Grawe of Waverly, Iowa; twelve grandchildren, Adam (Bridget) Bollman, Ben Bollman, Rebecca Wedge, Jason (Christa) Albert, Katie (Jordan) Hoppenjans, Hannah (Patrick) O’Malley, Jay Grawe, Joseph Grawe, Callie Grawe, Aubrey Grawe, Haley Grawe, and Camryn Grawe; five great grandchildren, Madison, Brooklyn, Avery, Loryn and Miles; three sisters, Vivian Lofgren, Dorothy Runneberg, Marilyn Riopelle; and one brother, Bob Lathrop.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Byron and Anna; her husband, Joe; a grandson, Edward Wedge; and two sisters, Lucille Lathrop and Ruth Anderson.
Celebration of Life Services will be held on Saturday, February 10, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church & School, with Pastor Arthur C. Bergren officiating and a greeting from Bartels by Pastor Sandra Burroughs. Burial will be in Harlington Cemetery in Waverly. Public visitation for Alice will be held on Friday, February 9, 2018 from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly and for an hour prior to services on Saturday at the church. Memorials may be directed to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church & School or Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community. Online condolences for Alice may be left at www.kaisercorson.com.
