John (Jeff) Bernard Workman was born January 2, 1906, at Laurens, Iowa, the son of Norval and Anna Stevenson Workman. He passed away February 1, 1984, at Spencer Municipal Hospital, Spencer, Iowa.

As a boy, Mr. Workman grew up in Laurens and attended Laurens High School. He was united in marriage to the former Mabel Johnson on August 29, 1925, in services at Cherokee, Iowa, and the couple returned to Laurens where Mr. Workman was employed by M. & J.R. Hakes. In 1944 Jeff was transferred by Hakes to Spencer, where he was in charge of the Spencer egg station. After his retirement from Hakes in 1963, Mr. & Mrs. Workman purchased a grocery store (Jeff & Mabel's) in Spirit Lake, but failing health forced his retirement in 1965. The couple returned to Laurens in 1977. Mr. Workman was a member of the B.P.O.E. and Loyal Order of Moose in Spencer.

Survivors include his wife, Mabel; a son, Richard L. (Peg) Workman, Cedar Rapids; daughters, Mrs. Colleen M. (Henry) Prebish, Aurora, Colorado, and Mrs. Marilyn J. (Robert) Mears, Cape Coral, Florida; 9 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a brother, Joe and sisters, Mrs. Helen Brown and Mrs. Nellie (Vernon) Miller, all of Laurens. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Madeline and Maude Edmundson.
