Fred W. Roewe, 83, dies; funeral set for this afternoon

Fred W. Roewe, 83, a Laurens area farmer who was long active in the Democratic Party, died Monday night at the Spencer Municipal Hospital where he had been hospitalized earlier in the day.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. this Thursday) afternoon at the United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Merlin Nelson officiating. Burial will be in the Laurens Cemetery. Mrs. Fred Forsythe, and Mrs. Matt Shankland, accompanied by Mrs. Willis Godfrey, will sing "How Great Thou Art" and "No Night There" at the funeral.

Pall bearers will be Robert Mather, Glenn Kees, L. J. Hawley, George Hoffman, R. M. Hinn and Fred Ludwig. Honorary pall bearers are to be C. F. Hawley, Clyde Horsley, U. F. Dubbert, Harry Lund, Ben Greiman, Harold Simmerson, Del DeHaan and Julian Jensen. Hitchcock Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born Here

Born Feb. 5, 1885, in the Laurens area, he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. August Roewe. He attended schools here, and married the former Mae Hawley March 9, 1911. They had farmed in the Laurens area until moving into town in the mid 1940s. An active member of the Democratic party, he was precinct committeeman for Swan Lake Township at his death. He had held other offices within the party.

A pioneer in farm programs on the state and local level, Mr. Roewe was an early farmer field man under the former Agriculture Adjustment Act during the 1930s. He later served for several years as a member of the state agricultural conservation committee. He was a 50 year member of Grace Lodge AF and AM and was a member of the Order of Eastern Star in Laurens.

He is survived by his widow; three sons, August, Joe and Henry, all of Laurens; and one daughter, Mrs. Harry (Rachel) Morgan of Glenview, 111.; 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Three sisters, all of Laurens, also survive. They are Bertha Roewe, Mrs. Katie Mather and Mrs. Laura Lawlor.
