Nielsen, Nis 1834-1922

Nis Nielson, a well known resident of Fredonia township, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J.P. Larson. Mr. Nielson had reached the age of 87 years and his death was due to senility. The funeral was held Monday afternoon.

Mr. Nielson, despite his age, enjoyed good health up to two weeks prior to his death, when he suddenly began to decline. He passed away at 1 o’clock Saturday, April 1.

Nis Nielsen was a native Denmark, born November 28, 1834, near the village of Skrustrub [Skrydstrup] Schleswig. He came from a farming family and followed this occupation nearly all of his life. He was married to Herlig Lund, in his native village in 1861, and the couple continued to live there for some time. In 1883 Mr. and Mrs. Nielsen, with four children came to the United States and immediately settled on a small farm in Fredonia township and all have resided in that community ever since. Four children passed away in their native land, and one, Mrs. C.P. Kloster, died in Fredonia 15 years ago. The surviving children are: Mrs. J.P. Larsen, Mrs. Tovel Kloster and Mrs. H.P. Mortensen.

Mrs. Nielsen died in 1915 and since then Mr. Nielsen has been living with the J.P. Larsen family. The deceased was a veteran of the famous Danish-Prussian war of 1864, in which he was a non-commissioned officer and to his last days he was the proud possessor of an honor medal awarded him after the close of that conflict. Mr. Nielsen was a staunch member of the Danish Lutheran congregation of Fredonia township. He helped in the construction of the church building northwest of Remsen in 1898, and was a regular attendant and took an active part in the affairs of the congregation ever since then. He was a kind and loving husband and father, a splendid neighbor and friend, and a highly respected citizen of his community.

The funeral was held Monday afternoon, services being conducted in the Danish church by Rev. J. Soe, of Marcus, followed by interment in the Remsen cemetery, and the last rites were largely attended. – Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel, April 11, 1922, page 1.

There was a similar obit in the Remsen Bell-Enterprise except the first line reads, “FOUR CALLED BY DEATH. Mrs. Raetz, Mrs. Walker, Nis Nielsen and Wm. Hensing Buried This Week…. Death removed another aged and highly respected citizen of the community early last Saturday morning, when Nis Nelson [Nielsen], a well known resident of Fredonia township, passed away….” - Remsen Bell Enterprise, April 6, 1922, page 8, column 1

The funeral services of Nis Nielsen which were held in the Danish Lutheran church at Remsen Monday afternoon were attended by a large number of friends and relatives of the deceased from and around this vicinity. HE was 7 [87] years of age and died Saturday morning at 1 o’clock. Rasmus Juhl of Marcus, John Juhl, Andrew Kloster, P. H.
