Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon for Hans Mortensen who has been in failing health for the past two years and on Aug. 27th suffered a stroke. He passed away on Sept. 5th at the age of 86 years and 29 days.

Hans Peter Mortensen, son of Morten Petersen and Maren Christendatter Petersen was born Aug. 6th, 1860 in Uggerlose, Rorby Township, Holbaek County, Sjaelland, Denmark was baptized the same year in Rorby Lutheran Church. He was reared and instructed in the Lutheran faith and was confirmed the first Sunday in October, 1871 in Rorby Church. His mother died when he was seven years old and his father two years later. He started herding geese, and from then on he earned his own living. He immigrated to the United States, arriving in Le Mars March 27, in 1882. He worked on farms in the vicinity of Remsen for 5 years.

On Nov. 19th, 1887, he was united in marriage to Maren Nielsen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nis Nielsen in Le Mars, Iowa and started farming in Fredonia Township and has lived there ever since.

In 1882 he purchased his first 80 acres in Sec. 9 Fredonia Twp. and in 1900 added another 80 acres to it. In 1908 he sold the 160 and bought a 1/2 section and adding another 80 acres to it on which he lived until his death.

During his life he has held several township offices.

He leaves to mourn his passing his bereaved widow, Mrs. Maren Mortensen, 7 children (3 daughters and 4 sons) who are Mrs. Chris Juhl (Mary) of Marcus, Nis, Morten, Mrs. Alfred Lasson (Herlig), Niels all of Remsen, Peter and Boline at home. There were 18 grandchildren and 11 great grand children.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 1:30 from the home and 2:00 o’clock from St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran church, conducted by Rev. Paul Wuebben.

Paul bearers were six nephews of the deceased, Louis Larson; Nis Larson; J.A. Kloster; Nis Kloster; Jack Kloster and Nick Kloster.

Note: The oldest son in Denmark took the father’s first name and added sen, meaning son for their last name.
