PIONEER WOMAN
LAID TO REST

Mrs. H.P. Mortensen Pass-
ed Away Monday
Evening

Remsen Bell Enterprise—Less than four months after the passing of her husband, Hans P. Mortensen, death Monday night claimed Mrs. Maren Mortensen, 80, resident here for 59 years. She passed away at her home 10 miles northwest of town, in Fredonia township where she spent all of her married life. Surviving are four sons and three daughters. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon

Mrs. Mortensen had been in failing health with a heart ailment for nearly ten years and her condition had been aggravated since the death of her life companion several weeks ago. Although her family and professional help did all possible to alleviate her suffering and make life comfortable for her, her condition refused to yield to treatment and she passed away with her children at her beside at 10:30 Monday night.

Maren Magadalene Mortensen, nee Nielsen, was born March 6, 1866, at Skrydstrup, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nis Nielsen. In her native village she was baptized in the Lutheran faith shortly after birth, and confirmed March 21, 1880. In Le Mars on November 19, 1887, she became the wife of Hans P. Mortensen, who had come to this country in 1882 and had been working on farms in this territory. The couple bought land and established a home northwest of town where they resided until death overtook them. They lived on their late farm since 1908.

Mrs. Mortensen was a true Christian woman, devoted to her family and was beloved by her every acquaintance throughout the neighborhood. Her passing is a severe blow to the devoted children and their many friends join sincere condolences.

The following children survive: Mrs. Chris (Mary) Juhl, Marcus; Nis and Morten Mortensen, Mrs. Alfred (Herlig) Lassen, Niels, Peter and Boline, all of Remsen. There are 18 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the Mortensen home at 1:30 o’clock Thursday afternoon, with services conducted by the Rev. Paul Wuebben in St. Paul’s Evangelical church at 2 o’clock and interment in the Remsen cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were six nephews—Jens, Nis, Nick and Jack Kloster and Louis and Nis Larson.
