Mrs. Pearl Kurtz

Mrs. Ed (Pearl) Kurtz, 85, of LeMars died Monday (Sept. 21, 1987) at Plymouth Manor Care Center in LeMars after a long illness.

Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Calvary United Methodist Church in LeMars with Rev. Howard Marty officiating. Burial will be in LeMars Memorial Cemetery under direction of the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Friday.

The former Pearl Reeves, she was born April 25, 1902, at rural Seney, the daughter of William and Sarah (Weber) Reeves. She was a 1920 graduate of LeMars High School, a 1928 graduate of Western Union College in LeMars and received her MA degree in 1932 from Northwestern University at Evanston, Ill.

She married Edward E. Kurtz on Feb. 21, 1937, at Omaha. He preceded her in death.

Mrs. Kurtz was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church. She taught school at Bradgate, Sheffield and Belle Plaine, Iowa, at Osceola Junior College and Merrill elementary school. She joined the Westmar College faculty in 1955 and remained there until 1960.

Survivors are a daughter, Mrs. John H. (Carol) Pemberton of Eden Prairie, Minn.; a brother, George Reeves of LeMars; two sisters, Carolyn Strong of Biloxi, Miss.; and Vera Cumings (sic-Cummings) of Palo, Iowa; and two grandsons, Douglas E. Pemberton of New York City, N. Y., and James H. Pemberton of Eden Prairie, Minn. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and a brother, Clarence Reeves Jr.

A memorial has been established in her name with the American Cancer Society.
