Mary Anne Zeig Early Settler Taken By Death

Was Member of Family Locating in Plymouth County In Early Seventies

Death claimed Mrs. Mary Anne Zeig, 85, well known pioneer of Plymouth county at her home 22 Second Ave. SE., Tuesday, after a lingering illness. She became seriously ill about five weeks ago.

Mary Anne Wagner was born in Luxemburg, Europe, April 4, 1852, and when a child of five years came with her parents to the United States. They settled in Springbrook, Jackson county, Iowa. She was married at that place to Nicholas Zeig, January 22, 1873. Two years after their marriage they came to Plymouth county and engaged in farming. They settled first on the C.D. Hoffmann farm and subsequently on the Gehlen place and then located on the H. C. Curtis place in America township, where they lived for twenty-three years until coming to Le Mars, where she made her home since.

Mrs. Zeig is survived by one daughter, Mrs. I. S. Givens, of Atkinson, Neb., and three sons, John, Dan and William Zeig, of Le Mars, six grandchildren, Cloyd Zeig, Helen, Harold, Arthur, Alice and Ethel Givens; one brother C. B. Wagner, and a sister, Mrs. Jos. Galles, of Remsen. Her husband died February 18, 1929. Five children preceded her in death, some of them during a smallpox epidemic in the early eighties and one son, Charles, was drowned in the Willow Creek at Oyens in 1903 at the age of 27 years. Mrs. Zeig was a member of one of the first families settling around Le Mars. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Mrs. Mich Hentges, Mrs. J. W. Galles and Mrs. Edward Beache, and four brothers, Nicholas, Charles, Dominisee and John Wagner.

Mrs. Zeig was a devoted wife and mother, a good neighbor and enjoyed the esteem of all who knew her. She was a devout member of the Catholic church and a member of the Christian Mothers Society.

The funeral was held Thursday morning at St. Joseph church, Msgr. J. D. Fisch officiating at the requiem mass, and internment was made in St. Joseph cemetery.
