John V Waldschmitt Jr., 92, of LeMars, Ia. died Sunday, Feb 24. 2002 at the V.A. Medical Center in Sioux Falls. So Dak. Funeral services were at 10 30 a.m. Saturday. Mar. 2 at St Joseph's Catholic Church. LeMars, with Rev. Andrew Hoffman officiating. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, LeMars. Military honors were conducted at graveside by Wasmer American Legion Post No. 241 of LeMars. The Feuerstein Funeral Home of LeMars was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Waldschmitt was born Dec 23, 1909, on the family farm south of Remsen, the son of John V. Sr. and Dena (Zink) Waldschmitt He was raised in the Remsen area. During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy. He married Leona Brauch on June 13, 1944, in LeMars. They lived for a couple of years in Remsen where John managed the American Legion Club. In 1947 the couple moved to LeMars. John owned and operated Central Tap in LeMars for many years and later owned and operated John Waldschmitt Real Estate for many years. His wife Leona died on Oct. 9, 1984. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and the Wasmer American Legion Post No. 241 of LeMars. He was also co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous (District 15) in 1958.
Surviving are two sons, Mike Waldschmitt of LeMars and Dr. Joe Waldschmitt and his wife Cindi of Tucson, Ariz.; a daughter, Mary Pearson of West Des Moines, la.; six grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Leona, four brothers, Paul, Ray, Mike and Louis Waldschmitt; and three sisters, Mary (Frek.
