Death of Adam Weidenfeller

Adam Weidenfeller passed away at the home of his son, Anton Weidenfeller in Le Mars on Tuesday of cancer of the stomach at the age of 77 years.

He was born in Nassna, Prussia, on March 24, 1826, and at the age of 22 joined the revolutionary forces and fought for two years.

He was united in marriage in 1858 with Miss Emma Marie Schenkelburg and three children were born to them and survive them, and are honored citizens of this community. They are Anton, John and Chris Weidenfeller, all of this county.

He came to the United States in 1872 and came direct to Johnson Township in this county where he his son, Chris Weidenfeller and lived there until 1890, when he moved to Alton where he lived until coming to Le Mars in 1900. His wife preceded him to the grave, having died May 22, 1902.

Oddly enough the wife like the husband died on Thursday and was buried on Saturday. Since the death of his wife he has made his home with his son. He was taken sick with cancer of the stomach in the early spring and about two months suffered most intensely but seldom uttered a complaint. He literally starved to death and from a man of round build was reduced to a mere skeleton.

He was a member of a family of seven children one girl and six boys, but only two brothers survive him. They are Chris Weidenfeller, of Hawarden, and Andrew weidenfeller who is in the hospital at Dubuque.

The deceased was a man of the highest integrity and honor and his word was as his bond and he was very highly respected by al and his death will cause sorrow to the old time residents of the county was new and when the country was new and when it required a brave hero to come to the west to become a member of the small army of home makers.

The funeral was held on Saturday morning at St. Joseph’s Church, Rev. F. X. Feuerstein officiating, and was very largely attended. Many from the west part of the country were prevented from attending by the heavy rain and electrical storm. Among the relatives from abroad were Peter Weidenfeller, Alcester; Chris and Anton Weidenfeller, Henry Roeper, and Mrs. Chas. Tritz, Hawarden; Alois Weidenfeller, Akron, John Simeon and family Akron. About forty old friends and neighbors from Alton also came down to attend the chapel.
