William Berg, an old and well known resident of Grant Township, died on Saturday, November 17, at the home of his son, Herman Berg. His death was due chiefly to old age and the breaking down of a wonderful constitution as he was nearly eighty-five years of age.

Mr. Berg of late years after becoming a widower had made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Jurgen Renken, residing on Cedar Street, this city. The past few months he had been living with his son.

William Berg was a native of Germany and was born near Maine, in the province, on April 27, 1833. There he attended school, grow to manhood, served his term in the army and was married. He worked at diverse occupations and later along with thousands of his countryman, seeking for better conditions in a civilized land, shot the dust off his native place from his feet and came to the country where opportunity stands open to every man.

With his family he located in Grant Township in 1860 and with hard work and strict economy and assisted by his children, acquired a farm of his own and a competence which were beyond the conception of dreams and hopes which filled his mind when a youth.

His wife died about eighteen years ago. For some years he lived alone and later made his home with his sons and daughters.

He is survived by two sons, Herman and Louis Berg, of Grant Township; and a daughter, Mrs. Jurgen Renken, of this city. He also leaves sixteen children and twenty-three grandchildren.

Mr. Berg was well known in the community where he lived and was highly respected. The funeral services will be held at the Grant Township Lutheran Church this afternoon, Rev. J. D. Meyer officiating.
