BERNICE PLUEGER
Bernice Mary Plueger, 89, of Merrill died Tuesday, July 30, 2002, at Brentwood Good Samaritan Center in Le Mars. Bernice Plueger was born September 19, 1912, on a farm near Hinton, the daughter of Louis and Minnie (Ellison) Winter. She graduated from Hinton High School and attended Cedar Falls State Teacher’s College (now the University of Northern Iowa) where she received her teaching certificate. Bernice taught school in Grant Township from 1931 to 1940 at Grant No 2, Grant No 5,and Grant No 6. On September 28, 1940, Bernice and Elmer George Louis Plueger were united in marriage at the Winter family farm near Hinton. The couple made their home in Merrill. Bernice returned to teaching in 1947 at Grant Township School No 7. She taught in Brunsville and Merrill prior to her retirement in 1969. In January of this year the couple moved to Park Place Estates in Le Mars. Bernice became a resident of Brentwood Good Samaritan Center in Le Mars on July 1. Bernice was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Merrill. She was also a member of Ladies Aid (WELCA) and had taught Sunday school. She enjoyed sewing, crafts, crocheting and baking. Bernice thoroughly enjoyed teaching and working with children. Survivors include her husband, Elmer of Le Mars: two sons Louis and his wife Patricia of Little Canada, Minnesota, and Larry and his wife Cheryl, of Merrill; 5 grandsons, 1 great-grandson, 1 step-great-granddaughter, a sister Gladys Taylor of Brunsville, and a sister-in-law Evelyn Winter of Le Mars. Preceded her in death her parents, infant sister, and brother, two sisters, Elvera Schneider and Mildred Schultz and two brothers Louis Winter and Merlin Winter. Funeral services were held at St. John Lutheran Church in Merrill. Burial at Hillside Cemetery.
