Walter “Walt” Martfeld, 86, of Le Mars, Iowa passed away Sunday, November 17, 2013 at Unity Point Health – St. Luke’s in Sioux City, Iowa.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, November 21, 2013 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. in Le Mars. Reverend Gary Landsness will officiate. Burial with military honors provided by the Wasmer American Legion Post 241 of Le Mars will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens in Le Mars. Visitation will be after 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 20, 2013 with the family present after 5:00 p.m., and a Prayer service at 7:00 p.m., all at Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars. Visitation will resume from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Thursday at the church.

Walter Frederick Martfeld was born December 20, 1926 in Le Mars, Iowa, the son of Frederick and Anna (Freiberg) Martfeld. He attended country school in Plymouth County, Iowa. Following his schooling, he helped his family on the farm.

He was drafted into the United States Army and served his country during the Korean Conflict. Following his discharge, he returned to the Le Mars area.

He was united in marriage to Ruby Berger on June 20, 1954 in Le Mars. He and Ruby farmed near Le Mars for many years. Walt worked for Al Schenkelberg Implement in Le Mars and later he went to work for the Road Department with Plymouth County. Walt retired from the county after 18 years of service.

Walt was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, serving as an usher for many years. He was also a member of the Wasmer American Legion Post 241 in Le Mars. Through the years, Walt enjoyed woodworking and doing handyman work. He will be greatly missed.

Survivors include his children: Russ Martfeld of Le Mars, Sue (Cliff) Eye of Kansas City, MO, Sheryl (Randy) Heissel of Le Mars, and Ron Martfeld of Le Mars; 9 grandchildren: Derek (Lauren) Eye, Brian Eye all of Roeland Park, KS, Ryan and Nick Heissel, Craig (April Peyton) Martfeld, and Megan (Corey) Arens all of Le Mars; 3 great grandchildren: Leala Martfeld, Callie and soon to be born Mason Arens all of Le Mars; a close friend Becky Collison of Blencoe, IA; a brother: Eddie (Norma) Martfeld of Le Mars; and 2 nieces, 2 nephews, and 2 great nephews all of Le Mars.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ruby; his sisters: Delores Martfeld, Lucille Baerg, Irene Winchester, and Judy Beeck; and a nephew: Larry Winchester.
