Dr. Martin Joynt Services Held

Was Physician Here 40 Years

Dr. Martin J. Joynt, 77, prominent LeMars physician, died Wednesday night, Dec. 7, 1955, at Sacred Heart hospital where he had been a patient since suffering a heart attack a month ago.

He was eye, ear, nose and throat specialist at LeMars Clinic until the time of his death. Dr. Joynt had celebrated 50 years in the medical profession in June of this year, and was given a 50-year pin from the State Medical Society at a banquet in his honor.

A solemn requiem mass was said at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. James Catholic church. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery under the direction of Wiltgen-Luedtke funeral home. A number of professional offices in LeMars were closed during the hours of the funeral.

Martin Joynt was born Nov. 7, 1878 , at Emmetsburg. His marriage to Regina Rooney took place in 1907. He was graduated from the State University of Iowa college of liberal arts in 1903, and received his M. D. degree there in 1905. Following graduation, he took up general practice at Jesup , Iowa , where he remained eight years.

In 1913 Dr. Joynt began a series of postgraduate studies at Mill's Eye hospital and Jefferson hospital in Philadelphia , and the Manhattan Eye and Ear hospital and New York Eye and Ear infirmary in New York City .

Dr. Joynt came to LeMars in 1915. He was associated in practice with Drs. William Larson and J. Fettes until the LeMars Clinic was organized in 1918. He was one of the founders of the clinic.

The doctor was especially proud of his collection of antique and unusual clocks, which he kept in repair himself.

Survivors are his wife, Regina of LeMars; a son John of Des Moines; two grandchildren; four brothers, Dr. Robert J. Joynt of LeMars, Dr. Michael F. Joynt of Marcus, Dr. Albert J. Joynt of Waterloo, and William D. Joynt of Emmetsburg; and three sisters, Mrs. Leon Dawson of Des Moines, Mrs. Louis Laughlin of Emmetsburg, and Mrs. Vincent Southworth of Laurens.
