Lester E. Williams

Lester E. Williams, 93, of Sioux City died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel with the Rev. Lauice Streyffeler officiating. Burial will be in Liberty-Perry Cemetery, rural Hinton. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Williams was born Feb. 23, 1908, in Plymouth county, Iowa, the son of Earl and Belle (Husted) Williams. He attended school in rural Plymouth County.

He married Genevieve Griffith on March 19, 1932, in Sioux Falls, S.D. He worked for 17 years as a maintainer in Plymouth County until 1941, when he purchased a farm and farmed until 1989.

He was past president of the Horseless Carriage Club of Sioux City, and a charger member of the Pioneer Machinery Club in Merrill, Iowa. He served on the election board for 65 years, as a soil commissioner for five years in the 1950’s, and as township assessor in Hancock Township in Plymouth County. He was very active with the Plymouth County Fair Board and helped with the Hinton Centennial. He was also on the Plymouth County Zoning Board.

Survivors include his wife, Genevieve Williams of Sioux City; a daughter, Jan Nelson of Sioux city; and adopted son, Dennis and his wife, Jan Trometer of Jamaica, Iowa; a son-in-law, Ed Nelson of Sioux City; seven brothers, Melvin and Gary both of Westfield, Iowa; John of Sioux City, Howard and Daryl both of South Sioux City, Dick of Merrill, and Paul of Hinton; two sisters, Jean Woodruff and Doris Sendt, both of Los Angeles, Calif.; a grandchild; two great-grandchildren; and a great-great-great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by an infant sister.
Pallbearers will be Charles Pridie, Bruce Elliott, Jim and Dick Beaulieu, Roger Gaswint and Tubby Mitchell. Honorary pallbearers will be Waldon Harding and Gale Robinson.
