LE MARS, Iowa | James Ulysses Lorenzen, 83, of Le Mars, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2013, at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church of Le Mars. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Friday, with family present 5 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Mauer–Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. Visitation will resume one hour prior to services Saturday at the church.
James Ulysses Lorenzen was born Sept. 22, 1929, in Le Mars, the son of Carl and Ethel (Shelton) Lorenzen. James graduated from Le Mars Community High School and Westmar College. He received his master's degree from the University of South Dakota. James served in the U.S. Air Force.

James married Marjorie Passer on May 25, 1952, in Wells, Minn.

James taught and coached in Janesville, Iowa, and West Union, Iowa. He was employed for 32 years at Le Mars Community Schools, where he served as a coach, teacher, athletic director and guidance counselor.

He was an active member of United Methodist Church of Le Mars. In 1986, James was named Iowa Athletic Director of the Year. In 1994, James was inducted into the Iowa High School Athletic Directors Hall of Fame.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Marjorie of Le Mars; daughters, Debra Acord of Woodland Park, Colo., and Becky (Tim) Bedard of Waterloo, Iowa; sons, David (Cheryl) Lorenzen of Waukee, Iowa, and Toby (Jill) Lorenzen of Rock Rapids, Iowa; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Webb Lorenzen; a sister-in-law, Mary Lorenzen; his in-laws, Art and Helen Passer; great-grandchildren Christian and Rylee Fillinger; and his son-in-law, Mark Acord.

Memorials may be directed to United Methodist Church of Le Mars or Hospice of Siouxland.
