Pioneer Resident Died Last Friday
Mrs. Pearce Lived Here Seventy Years
Mrs. Fred Pearce, a resident of Plymouth county for 70 years, died May 30 at the home of her daughter, Mrs, J. E. Kelley in LeMars after a two days illness at the advanced age of 88 years, 2 months and 13 days.
Ella Gannon was born March 17, 1859, near Oswego, Illinois, the daughter of James and Mary Gannon, and came to Plymouth county in February 1877. On November 15, 1877, she was married to Fred Pearce in LeMars. They spent that winter in Oswego, Illinois, returned to Plymouth county where they farmed until 1880 when they went to Yorkville, Illinois, where Mr. Pearce worked in a paper mill four years. They returned to Iowa in 1884 where Mr. Pearce farmed with his father, Ezra Pearce, in Union township before moving to Worthington, Minn. They later located in Cumberland, Wis., in 1924, where they farmed until 1933 when Mr. and Mrs. Pearce returned to LeMars to make their home with their daughter, Mrs. J. E. Kelley. Mr. Pearce died September 2, 1934.
Mrs. Pearce is survived by one son, E. G. Pearce of Arroyo Grande, Calif., Mrs. J. E. Kelley, LeMars, three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. The three grandchildren are Mrs. Walter Lentz and James P. Kelley, LeMars, and Mrs. W. G. Erickson of Ventura, Calif. She is also survived by a sister, Mrs. John Horrigan, and numerous nieces and nephews. A daughter, Sylvia M. Pearce, died April 6, 1939.
Funeral services were held at St. James Catholic church Monday morning, June 2, with Rev. L. J. LaVelle officiating and burial was in St. James Cemetery.
NOTE: Mrs. Ella Pearce is buried in the LeMars City/Memorial Cemetery with her husband and daughter, in Block 8.
