Heart Attack Proves Fatal For Pioneer

Fred Pearce Located in Union Township In Early Days Of Settlement

Death claimed Fred Pearce, one of the early settlers in Plymouth county, at the home of his son-in-law, J. B. Kelley, 515 First street SW., in this city, Sunday morning, at the age of 80 years.

Mr. Pearce had been in failing health for some time due to infirmities of age. An attack of heart trouble was the immediate cause of death.

Mr. Pearce was born May 14, 1854, near Oswego, Illinois, and grew up on a farm near there. With other members of the Pearce family, he came to Plymouth county in the days of early settlement in 1877. His uncle bought large farms in Union township at that time. Mr. Pearce took up a farm in early days and farmed for many years. He lived in LeMars in intervening years, and for some time he was custodian of the city cemetery. Moving from here he went to Minnesota and Wisconsin and for the past nine years farmed at Cumberland, Wis., returning to LeMars a few months ago.

He was united in marriage with Miss Ella Gannon, in LeMars, November 15, 1877.

His death is mourned by his wife, one son, B. G. Pearce, of San Luis Obispo, Calif., two daughters, Mrs. J. E. Kelley, of LeMars and Miss Sylvia Pearce, of Omaha, Neb., and grandchildren: Juanita Spinharney, San Luis Obispo, Cal., James. Robert and Kathleen Kelley, of Le Mars, and one great grandchild, Mary Joanne Spinharney, of San Luis Obispo, Cal. He is also survived by his sisters, Mrs, Clara Sanders, McCool, Neb., Mrs. Cornelius Mutchler, Linden, Wash.. Mrs. J. B. Cunningham, Akron; Mrs. C. H. Willis, Aurora, 111.; and his brother, P. A. Pearce, of Wheaton, III.

The funeral will be held at the First Presbyterian church, this afternoon at 2:30. Rev. Harold A. Smith officiating and interment made in the city cemetery.

Mr. Pearce had a wide acquaintance and was well known in Plymouth county, especially among the older residents.
