Elizabeth “Betty” M. Pochop, 92, of Le Mars, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 4, 2011 at the Good Samaritan Society in Le Mars.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday July 7, 2011 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Struble, Iowa with Reverend Dan Greving officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitations will be anytime after 3:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Carlsen-Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars, where there will be a rosary at 4:00 p.m. by the Altar-Rosary Society, and a Vigil Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. The family will be present from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and from 6:00 p.m to 8:00 p.m. Visitation will also be for one hour before the Funeral on Thursday morning at the Church in Struble.
Pallbearers will be Nick Puhl, Pat Puhl, Roger Smith, Daniel Smith, Mike VanderMolen, and Dave Schlesser.

The former Elizabeth Mary Schlesser was born January 21, 1919, in Elgin Township, Plymouth County, Iowa to Nick R. and Mary R. (Flaherty) Schlesser. She was the middle child of three daughters. Elizabeth attended Elgin Township #2 School and graduated from Le Mars Central High School. She received her teaching certificate and went on to teach at country schools. She greatly enjoyed her students and her role as a teacher. Elizabeth married Alvin John Pochop on December 27, 1954, at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars. Following their marriage the couple raised grain and livestock on their farm just east of Struble until Alvin’s death on June 26, 1992. Elizabeth continued to live on the family farm until 2001, when she moved into Le Mars.
Betty was a longtime member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and the Altar-Rosary Society in Struble. She enjoyed reading, writing letters, embroidery, feeding and watching birds and visiting with young people.
Survivors include two daughters and their husbands: Judy and Jerry Erickson of Estherville, IA, and Margaret and Jim Fuentes of rural Le Mars; two grandchildren: Ben Fuentes and Chris Fuentes; three step-grandchildren: Eric Erickson and his wife Melissa, Lisa Erickson and Carrie Erickson; nieces and nephews and their children: Betty and Chip Haight, Dorothy and Greg Sloma and their children: Megan and Brian, Mary and Roger Smith and their children: Alex, Teresa and Daniel, Nick and Deb Puhl and their children: Emily, Erin, Kevin and David, Pat Puhl, Eileen and Curtis Hora and their children: Andrew and Abbey.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Nick and Mary Schlesser; her husband, Alvin two sisters and their husbands: Vivian and George Meyer, and Roseen and Robert Puhl.
