ARMAND HERZBERG, On Tractor at State Job, Killed by Semi

Armand C. Herzberg, 34, LeMars, was killed instantly Tuesday noon when the Iowa highway commission tractor he was driving was struck by a semi-trailer truck loaded with 20 tons of wholesale pork on hiway 75 a mile and a half north of Hinton, Iowa.

Mr. Herzberg, an Iowa highway commission worker the past 10 years, was killed outright when the southbound tractor he was driving was struck from the left rear by a truck driven by Ervin A. Schilke, 48, Seymour, Wis., who escaped injury, according to state trooper William Wruck.

Trooper Wruck said the truck, which was carrying a 40,000 pound load of pork in its refrigerated trailer, was bound for the west coast. The truck is leased by the John W. Meyer Wholesale Meat Co. of St. Louis.

The truck went off the highway and overturned in a ditch after the collision, according to trooper Wruck. The accident occurred about 12:30 p.m.

The Hinton rescue unit and Luken-Johnson ambulance were called. The ambulance brought Mr. Herzberg to Floyd Valley hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

County coroner Dr. Sherman Lindell was called to the scene about 12:55 p.m. It was reported Mr. Herzberg suffered head injuries. Swain wrecker from Kingsley and Stoos wrecker from LeMars loaded the demolished tractor onto a flat bed and it was taken to the highway commission garage in LeMars. The semi rig which remained hooked together went into the ditch and overturned. The two wreckers worked until 9:30 p.m. Tuesday before the big rig was pulled from the ditch and hauled to Kingsley. The semi-truck and trailer had extensive damage.

The cause of the crash is under investigation, according to trooper Wruck.

Armand Chris Herzberg, 34, 420 Sixth St. SW, was born Jan. 15, 1938, at Akron, the son of Chris Herzberg and the late Frances Mildred (Port) Herzberg. He married Nancy Michael, May 13, 1967, at Ft. Dodge, Iowa.

Mr. Herzberg, a lifelong resident of Plymouth county, was employed by the Iowa highway commission and operated Tiny’s saw shop at his home. He was a member of St. John’s American Lutheran Church.

Funeral services will be Friday at 1:30 p.m. at St. John’s American Lutheran church with Rev. Arnold Imbrock officiating.

Burial will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens, LeMars, under the direction of the Mauer funeral home.

Survivors are his wife, Nancy; a daughter, Christi and a son, Arlan, both at home, and his father, Chris Herzberg of LeMars. He was preceded in death by his mother, who died Aug. 4, 1953.
