Remsen Couple Died Last Week. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Maass in Late 80's.
Henry Maass, an aged resident of Remsen, died last Wednesday night only three days after the death of his wife, who passed away June 12. Mr. Maass was 86 years old and his wife was 88, and she had lived in Remsen 62 years. Mrs. Maass was buried Tuesday and Mr. Maass Saturday, funeral services at the Christ Lutheran church being conducted by the pastor, Rev. A. Noack.
Mrs. Maass had been in poor health for five years, her first sickness resulting from an accident when she fell in her home, fracturing her collarbone. Before having fully recovered the effects of this injury she fractured a hip a year later and since had been a semi-invalid.
Mrs. Maass was born in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, June 29, 1860, and while living in Germany she married John Kohnke. they came to Remsen in 1886 where Mr. Kohnke and two of their children died in 1888. On May 4, 1920 [should be 1890], she was married to Henry Maass, and they have four children living in that community.
Mr. Maass had a heart attack two weeks before his death and was thought to be recovering. He was able to attend his wife's funeral but died in his sleep." -- Le Mars Semi-Weekly Sentinel, June 22, 1948, page 5, column 5
